Going to a live show.

I've worked for a number of theatre companies, and all have been bedeviled by small audiences at one time or another so - go! Go see a show. Take in some live music. Support your local arts community.

I love live performance, even though I've been to some very, very strange plays and such, but I find it motivational to be around people who are putting themselves out there.

Absolutely!

I saw Lend Me a Tenor on the Saturday after St. Pat's down in Anchorage. Great show, very funny and well done! :) It sure beat going to a movie.

This year I've been supporting http://www.theroguetheatre.org/ thanks to their "pay-what-you-will" nights.

we (The South Devon Players/ http://southdevonplayers.weebly.com) get the best audiences that way too, when its a free show, stick a donation in the bucket/hat. Our biggest grossing shows have been that, instead of charging even £3 or £4 per head to attend)

Agreed totally. Though a lot of theatre groups and theatre people dont take the need to bloody advertise as seriously as they should. And even with posters in windows, street theatre promos, newspaper and radio and internet advertising galore, not to mention networking, spreading the word, always having copies of the latest theatre company newsletter in your bag to give out when chatting to people, etc etc etc you still encounter zillions of people who "didnt know" about it.

I think part of that though is down to advertising overload because in mass media these days you encounter so many adverts that the brain can switch off - although mine has a default setting to note anything arty/ local/ creative.

From elementary school until her junior year of high school, the smallbear and I took in as many of the local plays as we could -- school plays, community theater groups, semi-pro touring companies.
One thing we discovered -- you can sometimes find a truly great performance in a junior-high play cast, so "experience" is not the secret to a good actor.

Agreed! I love it now that we have a Performing Arts Center like 5 minutes from our apartment. They have both smaller scale shows and then some bigger ones as well being they have two theaters.

I REALLY should do just that. There's a local theater that offers shows and I always see the marquee and say 'I'd like to go see that' but never do.
