ghost_light: (Slug Bug!)

I never imagined using this icon for   anything more that whimsy bit...

Today I was downtown to pick up a donation for Ye Olde Youth Theatre's auction.  As I was getting back into George, a gentleman loitering on the sidewalk stopped me so he could ask "How do you like your slug bug?!?"

I assured him the I like George quite a lot.  As I started to pull out, the gentleman stepped off the curb and began to wave at me frantically.

When he was sure he had my attention, he walked over to another man (who I imagine was his friend, though the man was studiously smoking and ignoring us) and gave him a mighty punch in the arm.

Grinning over at me he bellowed"SLUG BUG!!"

That adorable little car causes violence in all cultures, I love it!

In the south US it seems to be "punch buggy" and I've heard another but I can't quite remember it at this moment. Slug bug is new to me but that's pretty cool!

Beetles rule! Over here it's the mini that catches most of the attention though; and by "Mini" I mean the real Mini - not the hideous BMW imposter with the Mini badge slapped on it :)

Yelling "Slug bug" was quite popular when my kids were little, but they did not hit each other, they kept score; whoever spotted the largest number on any given trip "won."

Yeah, we're "punch buggy, no punch back" here in the Northeast, too!

ROFL Oh that's too funny! My brother still says 'slug bug' every time he sees one but thankfully he's stopped punching my arm. :-)

I've never heard it called a "slug bug" but a "punch buggie". I had a red one (Ruby the Love Bug) that I bought as my graduation present to myself after college. Unfortunately, she was totaled by a drunk driver while parked outside my apartment in Boston. :( I loved that damn car! I keep telling Chris that if we ever start making shittons of money I want a convertable bug as a second car!

Also - do you do the "pull tops"? Those are when you see a convertible bug and you punch and then pull on the ear for a pull top. The older models are "old schools" and you can punch twice for that.

I used to love driving mine and seeing people wack one another.

I've never heard of that one.

Wait a minute, does this mean I can blame you (in part) for the number of students at Ye Olde Youth Theatre that have punched my arm in the last two weeks?

Possible....I always make a point of parking next to the other Bug in the lot so they look like they are in a gang.

I've never heard "slug bug", here in australia we use "punch buggy". But not so much anymore :/ Or maybe I'm getting old and the kids still do it ... i dunno.

I hope the guy he punched wasn't a stranger, although that would be highly amusing.

hello, old comment, new friend:

when I was growing up, we went through a fleet of Slug-a-Bugs (which must be what we called them in Sacramento County)... we were kind of broke and my dad (an attorney) had a barter arrangement with our mechanic (who was going through a divorce). They traded Labor cost for Labor cost, and then Galen paid filing fees and my dad paid for parts.

Kept our cars running for quite a long time, Galen's divorce problems did...

Thanks for the nostalgia moment.
