I finally saw a chiropractor today. My sternum has hurt since Saturday morning to the point that just rolling over in bed was waking me up with sharp bolts of pain, I couldn't breath deeply or slump. I finally found out why (not how, which is still the $100 question). I popped a rib out of alignment. The Dr. thinks he got that squared away, but now he wants to take a better look at the curvature of my spine and try some in-depth treatments on that.

I am very wary of chiropractors - the theory they base their medicine can edge on quackery and many folks have ended up harmed by the "alignments" - the spine is a terrible thing to mess with. Teller of Penn & Teller tried one for some back pain and now the pain is chronic - also they did a "B*llsh!t" show on back crackers.
I might go to a regular MD and have the diagnosis verified. I suffer from a similar recurring pain and it was diagnosed as costochondritis - google it for details - it is basically a chronic swelling of the cartilage in the ribcage. It can be quite painful and make breathing hurt but it doesn't affect the lungs and has nothing to do with rib alignment.
Just my two cents - your mileage may vary...

Take care and I hope you feel better!

It sounds so much more attractive than dislocating your left boob...

Ouch. My husband had somehow bumped his rib cage out of alignment--had sharp pains, couldn't move his left arm. Better with the chiropractor.
